White supremacy, violence and racism — why it is such a huge issue, and what you can do to reduce the harm and impact of it.
George Floyd’s death is an example of white supremacy, Nazism, violence and terrorism by the far right, and by police office, especially white policeman.
On May the 25th, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, George Floyd, an African American man was brutally choked to death by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, with 3 other police accomplices in tow. Derek has been charged with his murder, and it is quite possible more charges will follow.
But that wasn’t the only incident this year involving white people and black police officers. Just very recently, a white woman called the cops on a black man who was bird watching in relation to her and her dog in New York. Ahmaud Arbery, a black man, was killed while jogging, near Brunswick, in Georgia by a white man and his son. Just 6 days before the 1st anniversary of the Christchurch Mosque Attacks (March the 13th in Louisville, Kentucky), a 26 year old Black woman, Breonna Taylor, was brutally shot 8 times by police officers in a botched raid (the actual person of interest is in custody).
And these are only just a few of the cases involving police and/or white people killing or attempting to kill black people. There have been many, many cases of black people being killed by white officers or white supremacists — from Trayvon Martin through to Nia Wilson, an 18 year old girl killed at a MacArthur train station after exiting a BART train in Oakland, California (after the three sisters were ambushed and attacked by John Cowell — Nia’s two sisters survived the attack). There have also even been undocumented or unreported cases of white supremacist violence.
The violent murders of black people have led to protests, and other movements — both on and offline, as well as petitions, online donations, and calls to defund the police system.
There are so many issues that have risen out of white supremacy this year, and almost every year. These examples below of why white supremacy is such a major issue worldwide — it doesn’t just affect one person or a group of people. It can affect a whole community, or a country even. The impacts of the fallout — and issues of white supremacy are huge, and can be traumatic and can have a lasting impact. This can include:
- Cultural Appropriation (read more on the right wing terrorist movement “the boogaloo” and Hawaiian Aloha shirts)
- Impacts on business or company in question (In severe cases — like the Christchurch terror attacks, sustained economic impact, too)
- Violence, death and murder
- Vandalism, property damage, looting, theft, robbery
- Increased online bullying and harassment
- Increased workplace bullying and/or harassment
- Increased school or college/university bullying and/or harassment
- Increased risk of public harassment, including racial and sexual harassment
- Mental health impacts and trauma, including PTSD, depression and anxiety
- Physical and sexual health problems that can arise as a result of trauma, mental health issues, and violence from a hate crime incident.
- Behavioral disorders, eating disorders
- Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, smoking etc)
- Public disorder
- Suicide and/or self harm
- Increased amount of hate crimes in public
- Injuries from being attacked, or a miscarriage (in the case of the victim being pregnant and being racially attacked by a white supremacist)
- Indigenous people, and people of colour being excluded from public places, or being denied a service
- Indigenous, blacks, and other people of color more likely to be arrested and jailed by police for crimes
- Increased risk of terrorism, mass shootings and extreme violence
- Genocide
For this year, given that we are all in the middle of the COVID-19 coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) pandemic, there are additional issues which will not only have a greater and more negative impacts which can also yet last longer, but it will be more dangerous as well, in which, in this case, the fallout of racism and white supremacy will also include (in addition to the above):
- Violence, looting, theft, property damage, vandalism and chaos
- Severe Injuries, including burns, concussions, broken bones, and miscarriages (if the protester is pregnant and gets beaten up by police or white supremacists)
- Deaths as the result of the protests due to police brutality and white supremacists infiltrating, resulting in more violence
- Deaths as a result of contracting coronavirus due to coming in contact with an infected person at the protests
- The spread of the lethal coronavirus (which can lead to bigger health problems in the future) as a result of lack of social distancing
- Severe economic and financial impacts
- More job losses, businesses potentially closing down
- Increase in crime
- Increased resentment against the United States of America, particularly from families of black communities worldwide, as well as families around the world of BLM protesters being killed or injured by white supremacists and police officers
- Increased security risk towards politicians, journalists and royal family members
- Increased and heightened risk of terrorism
- Potential boycotts
- Potential increased risk of revenge/or justice/or retribution killings
- Extreme distrust of police officers and sheriffs by the public
- Severe increase in online harassment, bullying and internet trolling — with the majority coming from right wing trolls, such as Kaspa, GiGi and other Nazi. There, however, will also be an increase in online harassment coming from lowlife RIP trolls who mock the deaths of the protesters and the murdered black people.
Compile all the fall outs into one, and this is just one of the reasons that white supremacy is such a huge issue. White supremacy is a complex thing — it is not just about race. White supremacists who believe in the traditional way of life have an image of how a woman and a man should look and behave — rigid gender roles and traditional western values. White supremacy and racism is also responsible for body image, skin colour ideals, and especially the roles of a man and a woman. Members of the LGBTQA+ community are excluded from the “ traditional western values” ideology, in which the values includes pro-life and pro-family. Misogyny is a key part of white supremacy, as their ideals of a woman include staying in the kitchen and serving their husband food and beer, cleaning and looking after their children, and wearing covered up dresses, and long frilly dress and look motherly or maidenly. White supremacists are also against anyone with a disability (ableism), who identify as a feminist, who are against right wing values, who are anti fascist, who want a healthier, cleaner and a world free of pollution.
Health wise, many white supremacists are against sex education, reproductive rights, abortion, as well as gender based surgery. They also have willfully spread misinformation about the Coronavirus Pandemic, and blame 5G for coronavirus (which, tragically, has lead to vandalism attacks on 5G towers). They also have been responsible for anti lock down protests, which has led to spikes in coronavirus cases popping up where lock down protests were. Many dangerous conspiracy theories have popped up, including about the origins of coronavirus, leading to increased hate crimes against Asian people, notably East Asian people. Also, coronavirus affects people of colour disproportionately.
On the issues of religion — while some white supremacists claim to be allies with the Jews and Zionists, many of them are anti semitic. Muslims are hated by white supremacists, as are many religions as well, with the most known Islamophobic trope being the word “terrorism”. Christianity and Catholic is their favorite religion — despite the fact that there have been many, many racial attacks against Christian Churches that cater to black people.
On social class — White supremacists often snub rich people of colour — celebrities, politicians, journalists, and many white supremacists say that a celebrity of colour has opinion is not valid because they are rich. They also have disdain for the homeless. White supremacists often show hatred for people of colour who are poor, accusing them of benefiting from the system.
Economy and financial issues — white supremacy, simply put, is very bad for the economy. Nazis, for this instance in the pandemic, claim that reopening America will save the economy — but in fact, it is the direct opposite, as more deaths will mean less people at work. Also the more cases there are in a country, the longer the lock down will be and the worse outcome it will have for an economy as business stay shut and lose an income, but are racking up in rental payments and other bills. And this will impact other countries it has a huge trade deal with as well. Also white supremacy leads to extreme violence such as shootings, massacres (Christchurch terror attacks) and can render a certain area or a country unsafe — this will impact tourism, as tourists will have a fear of being attacked or killed. Similarly, business owners will fear for their safety and close their shop, resulting in a loss of income.
On environment — white supremacists do not care about the environment. Many Nazis think climate change is a hoax, they think of environmental organizations and activist groups like Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion as a terrorist group, and many white supremacists spread a lot of false information about environmental activism. Also, eco fascism is common with white supremacy, with white supremacists blaming modern life for environmental destruction, as well as saying that the coronavirus pandemic is mother nature’s way of healing the environment. Fact — coronavirus delays environmental projects, including conservation and is the cause of delaying social justice protests and movements for call to action.
On alcohol and drugs — Many white supremacists are against alcohol, drugs and smoking (admittedly, as a feminist and an activist, smoking is actually bad for your health and others around you). Alcohol Healthwatch (who I alerted two years ago about an ally of theirs whose Twitter profile — @lovemedo7 — was spreading anti Muslim hate), the World Health Organization, and Dr Nicki Jackson, and other anti alcohol campaigners, please take notice of this. Also, historically the Temperance movement had ties to the KKK, with female Klansmen advocating for prohibition on alcohol. Also, many alcohol companies and brands value diversity, such as Auckland’s Behemoth Brewery, who is known for launching attacks against Donald Trump with their beer labeling. Also, being sober does not make one a better person, Donald Trump, for example, doesn’t drink alcohol — and is now historically the worst president of the United States. Having said that, drink moderately and responsibly, but do NOT quit alcohol if you don’t want to. Also, some wine, beer and spirit companies have come out in celebration and/or support of women’s suffrage. Certain alcoholic beverages is also a traditional and a national drink in some countries, such as China, Korea and Mexico, and is not limited to being a white only thing.
Cannabis, is healthier than alcohol, smoking and even coffee and prescription medication (although it is NOT a replacement for prescribed medication). Yet the far right also are against it, saying it is harmful.
Note that some alcohol and cannabis companies have a racist history, and have discriminatory and unethical practices in their companies also. Also do note the irony is that the far right (those who DO drink) actually use beer and wine to insult Muslims (and ironically, Arabs and Persians — both have traditional drinks such as Arak, Raki and wine) as well.
On porn, adult entertainment and sex work — sex work is viewed as gross and as a collapse of the Western society by Nazis. Not only is consensual porn hated by Nazis, many even bring anti semitic tropes into it, blaming Jews for pornography and adult entertainment. Many white supremacists also say it violates women’s rights — when it is not the case. Being a SWERF violates women’s rights, and sometimes is an act of white supremacy, if the feminist in question is also against Islam, or does not care about the rights of Black Women or the indigenous people.
On pedophilia, incest, child abuse and rape — Tragically, but it does not come as a shock, as white supremacy is based around violence and goes hand in hand with misogyny, many white supremacists have had some form of a conviction for domestic violence, pedophilia/child sex offenses, rape, child pornography, incest or bestiality, or other sexual offences or other offences against women or children. Also, there have been many, many cases of rape being used as a tool to spread hatred and violence against marginalized groups, refugees and immigrants, and Muslims (and sometimes Jews). White Supremacists in Germany and other European countries have exploited the #MeToo movement by using white European women who were victims of violence to further their hatred and incite violence against Muslims, refugees, Africans and Middle Eastern people.
Also, notably, extremist groups like the EDL (English Defense League) and Britain First, and people like Paul Golding, Jayda Fransen and Tommy Robinson, have harassed and attacked Muslim people, accusing them of being part of a grooming gang involved in raping white European girls.
On veganism and animal abuse — White supremacists claim to condemn animal abuse. But when they do, they often blame it on Muslims and Jewish people (for Halal and Kosher meat), as well as cultures from Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific and Africa. They also choose to ignore the fact that animal abuse is a huge issue in all European countries, and other first world countries. Also, white supremacists do not practice what they preach. They claim to love animals, but they eat all sorts of meat, practice rodeo (Otago culture in NZ), Spanish bullfighting, trophy hunting, poaching, wearing exotic animal material other than leather, even wearing furs from an endangered animal, engage in animal hunting seasons (bird and deer, for example). Simply put, Nazis, and white supremacists are hypocrites — they use animal abuse as an excuse to be racist, while engaging in western customs, which pretty much amounts to animal abuse and harm. Also contradictory — many Trump supporters openly boast of eating meat and bacon, while others are vegan.
White supremacy is not a one way thing. It comes in many forms, shapes and ideologues. Different white supremacists hold different views. It can be subtle — and it is the scary and dangerous thing about it. While a lot of white supremacists dress quite prominent, and are easy to tell, unfortunately, many white supremacists are also very subtle in appearance — they can dress like a typical hipster bearded man drinking beer in a bar, an adventure or a sporty guy, who likes thrill sports like bungy jumping. They also behave and act normally in public, too, like going out to a bar for after work drinks with colleagues with a causal chat and no signs of racism. Some forms of hatred intertwine, like men’s rights activism, MGTOW, and Nazism.
Here are some of the things you can do to minimize or even prevent the harm from white supremacy, racism or violence.
- If you see encounter or witness racism in public, do NOT be a bystander. Use your phone, camera or any other recording device to record the incident — and report it to the police or security guards.
- If you have encountered a racist person on the internet, who has racially abused people on and/or offline, find out the person’s place of employment — and let their boss know.
- If you use social media and come across abuse, do not let it go. Report it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or any site that the offending material appears on.
- If you can, you can make another Twitter profile solely for the purpose of reporting abusive accounts, accounts dedicated to hate, violence, racism, white extremism and terrorism.
- If you have had been racially abused by an employee at work, or a fellow student at school or university, please report it to your place of work, school or university.
- If the racist site is a self hosted website, please report it to a web hoster (i.e GoDaddy), and explain the problem.
- Also get your sources from trusted and verified websites, ones known for posting truthful information and honest reporting and NOT ones with biased or hateful views. Example — when looking for information relating to the coronavirus pandemic, go to the WHO (World Health Organization) website. Avoid websites such as Breitbart, Voice of Europe, . Be careful with news outlets with a bias — such as The Sun, Daily Mail,
- Do NOT use white supremacist social media sites and/or forums such as Gab, Bitchute or 4Chan. Also, avoid dating sites which cater only to white people — and dating sites created by Nazis, incels and white supremacists. Romance, sex and love has NO boundaries regarding race, religion or skin colour.
- If you are a parent, and have a child with a digital device, please consider using parental controls on what sites they can and cannot visit relating to white supremacy and hate. You can also blacklist hateful sites from your child’s or teen’s device. Also it’s recommended that you do it on the family computer as well. Tell your children that they are not allowed to visit any hate sites, or set up an account on a known hateful social media outlet — such as GAB. Consider punishments such as making the child do extra chores around the home, taking away your child’s device, not allowing them to have junk food snacks, or even ban them from visiting their friends, or grounding your child for misbehavior. I will be later doing an article on how to raise a child that grows up to be accepting of everyone, regardless of their race, religion, skin colour, gender identity, sexual orientation. Additionally, banning your child from drinking alcohol until that they can prove that they are mature enough to consume alcohol without being hateful is a good idea.
- If you are an expecting mother (pregnant), please take the time to learn how to raise your child properly, understand your child’s needs, learn about their sexual or gender identity and respect it, learn how to set a good example for your future child and raise him or her on how to not be a hateful person.
- Do NOT buy products or hire a service from a company that is well known for discrimination — or buy products that have hateful symbols on them. Give racism NO profits. Do NOT go to bars or restaurants that are well known for discrimination.
- If you are at a bar or a restaurant and you suspect a white supremacist activity is taking place — even at the subtlest hints — just as you do if you think your drink has been spiked, do NOT ignore it. Tell the bar manager about your concerns, the group in question, let the bar or duty manager know you feel unsafe, and make sure you have photographs or recordings of the suspicious group in question. Watch out for signs of this — things like chatting in codes, yelling out codes, unusual attire, passing around notes, hand signs that represent white supremacy, exposed Nazi tattoos, or casual chatting hinting on organizing a white supremacist rally.
- Any suspicious activity, persons, or suspicious or unusual items lying around in public should be recorded, photographed, noted and reported to the police.
- If you have children, check who their idols are. Normal kids should idolize celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kim Kardashian etc. and sportspeople, credible journalists and politicians who fight for equality and social justice. No child should idolize Jayda Fransen, Lutz Bachmann, Donald Trump, Filip Dewinter, Geert Wilders or other hateful politician as a leader. Similarly, no child should idolize public figures such as Candace Owens, or Tomi Lahren. If your child idolizes Adolf Hitler, or mass murderers, or other Nazis, it is of great concern that you should address by talking to your child.
- If children like reading books and watching movies, parental guidance is recommended as many movies — even if it is classified as G or PG rated- have many themes relating to colonialism, hate speech, misogyny, and gender identity issues, including sexual orientation and kids might not understand what they are actually seeing because they are very young. Tin Tin is an example of this — although it is rated PG, it is a blatant example of racism, slavery and colonialism. Kids should NEVER be exposed to hateful publications such as Charlie Hebdo.
- If your kid has been sent to the principal for racially or sexually harassing others, or physically assaulting others based on race, religion or gender, consider a punishment that will correct your child’s behavior — and also consider educating your child on white supremacy and the dangers of it. Also consider banning the child from seeing his or her friends if they are the cause of his or her behavior. Make sure your child does not hang out in the wrong crowd.
Remember, white supremacy is a very complex issue, it manifests in many forms. And there is, yet so many things you can do to minimize, reduce or even prevent the impacts of it. White supremacy affects everyone, not just black people due to the nature of their views and ideologies. White supremacy does not only affect people — it can have a negative sustained impact on the economy and the environment. This is one of the reasons why white supremacy must be taken seriously and needs to be addressed.
